Mafia as a legacy: a disenchanted perspective on forms of organized crime

My presentation opens with a critical reconstruction of the Mafia phenomena's different interpretations proposed by experts of the various social sciences disciplines. The presentation then expands on the thesis that Mafia in Sicily and in other parts of the world (postcomunist Europe, for example), should not be regarded as an archaic social phenomenon heading towards a rapid extinction. On the contrary, Mafia is a type of organized crime that has taken on extremely modern structures and whose persistence in specific societies is due to the fact that citizens, on account of past negative experiences, do not see why they should develop trust relationships nowadays with the State and public sphere institutions in general.

Key words: Mafia, state, legitimacy, organized crime, informal networks, Sicily, Postcommunist Europe
